Smashing South Pennines Pubs

Picture
If you're looking for pubs in Haworth & the Worth Valley, Hebden Bridge, Holmfirth & Holme Valley, Marsden, Slaithwaite, Littleborough, Ripponden, Sowerby Bridge, Todmorden or Saddleworth  we've got plenty - all recommended by locals!  Real ale pubs, cosy pubs, pubs with good food, pubs that are perfect for walkers, stunning locations, family friendly pubs, pubs with beer gardens...you'll find them all in the South Pennines.

Pubs and inns have long been an important feature of the South Pennine landscape of moorland trails and ancient trading routes. The steep-sided valleys meant even short journeys were long and arduous. The inns along the route provided shelter and refreshment, just as they do today!  There are many walks to and from the pubs featured in this site at www.walkridesouthpennines.co.uk - or just follow the links from the Pub pages.

Come back again and again!
We hope you'll visit all of the pubs on this site and get a real taste of the South Pennines - its beer, its food, its landscape and people.   We don't advise you try it in a day, or even in a weekend.  Take your time and think of it as bagging the Wainwrights - you might have your favourite, but there'll always be another one to visit no matter how many times you return to the area.   And don't forget, if you find somewhere you think we've missed, let us know.

Here for the beer in....

Shibden Mill Inn, Halifax
Ilkley and Addingham
Whether you're visiting the Literature Festival or looking for Mary Jane on the moor, no visit to this genteel upper corner of the South Pennines would be complete without sampling the local produce. After your pint or pub lunch, be sure to visit Lishman's or pop into Betty's in Ilkley for foody gifts to take home.

Halifax
This Calderdale town is home to the Piece Hall, currently undergoing a major redevelopment, and boasts several distinct pubs, such as The Three Pigeons and Shibden Mill Inn.  We also like some of the more rural establishments such as The Cat i'th Well.

Haworth and the Worth Valley
While his sisters were writing, Branwell Bronte was drinking and many pubs in this area claim to have been patronised by him.  The moors immortalised by Charlotte, Emily and Anne are criss-crossed with paths, but there are inns along the way to keep you going.  On the way to Top Withins, you'll pass near the aptly-named Wuthering Heights, but if you're in the heart of Haworth, we suggest you try The Fleece or the stylish and contemporary Gascoigne's.

The Packhorse, nr Hebden Bridge
Hebden Bridge
This characterful town is known for its independent shops and cafe culture.  Whether you're visiting the galleries and boutiques or walking out on 'the tops', be sure to treat yourself to lunch or a swift half at one of the many pubs in the area.  The centrally-located White Lion Hotel and Old Gate Inn both have a good range of real ales and locally-sourced food, but locals have also recommended the Fox and Goose, The Stubbing Wharf, The Hinchliffe Arms, The Packhorse and The New Delight.

Holmfirth and the Holme Valley
Known world-wide as Last of the Summer Wine country, there are plenty of pubs worth visiting in this corner of West Yorkshire where the South Pennines landscape meets the Peak District.  Recommended to us were The Farmers Arms, The Nook and The Fleece.  And tucked away in Hepworth, you'll find The Butchers Arms.

Littleborough
The Pennine Way passes close by this border town and there are some very old pubs in the area.  Try The White House at the atmospheric Blackstone Edge or the haunted Rake just down the hill.

The Diggle Hotel - in Diggle!
Marsden and Slaithwaite
The Huddersfield Narrow Canal connects these two settlements and you can walk between the two, taking in the Riverhead Brewery Tap and the Commercial Hotel in Slaithwaite.  Tucked up on the hillside in Linthwaite is the quirky Sair Inn, also worth a visit.

Ripponden and Sowerby Bridge
This part of Calderdale is becoming renowned for its food and drink. We like the historic Old Bridge Inn and the quirky Jubilee Refreshment Rooms at Sowerby Bridge station.  Also have a look out for The Larder Delicatessen in Ripponden for take-away lunches and foody gifts to take home.

Saddleworth
The villages which make up this part of the South Pennines have their own disctinct character and pubs to match.  Just a handful of those recommended to us are The Church Inn, The Diggle Hotel, The Old Original, The Ram's Head and The Railway, but there are plenty more to choose from.  Let us know which ones you like!

Todmorden and Stoodley Pike
It's no surprise that the home of Incredible Edible is also home to several bars and pubs priding themselves on local ale and food.  What with the quirky pink Barearts Beer Shop and the historical Staff of Life, there should be somewhere to suit all tastes. And if you're up on the tops near Stoodley Pike, you might want to try the Shepherd's Rest.
