LITTLE VALLEY BREWERY

Picture
The brewery
Sited at Turkey Lodge, an old chicken and pig farm on the moors above Cragg Vale, Little Valley Brewery is one of only a handful of organic breweries in the UK.   Owners Wim van der Spek and Sue Cooper met in Kathmandu in 1999 - Wim had cycled there from his native Holland and Sue was cycling across Nepal back to England!  They set up the brewery in 2005 and together have established a local, regional and national reputation for a distinctive range of real ales.

What beers are here?

Little Valley brew eight permanent  beers which are  available on draft or in bottles.  Named after local landmarks and places, they cover a range of strengths and styles from the light and hoppy Withens Pale Ale (3.9%) to the crisp and cool and crisp Tod's Blonde (5%). Why not walk up to Stoodley Pike, inspiration for Stoodley Stout (4.8%)  or shop in Hebden Bridge before a glass of Hebden's Wheat (4.5%). Or see if you can taste the heather in Moor Ale (5.5%)?  Little Valley also brew wittily-named monthly specials eg Red Dyke and Dutch Courage.

Where to try
Little Valley beers are available as guest beers in pubs across the South Pennines, but can be regularly found at The Todmorden Vintner and Shibden Mill Inn in Halifax.  Bottled ales are also available on the Grand Central train line and at retail outlets across the area including Oasis in Hebden Bridge and The Bear in Todmorden as well as from the brewery itself.

Did you know?
In the early days of brewing, which was considered a domestic industry, most of the work was done by women.  Nowadays, men are usually employed for the heavy dray work.  Not at Little Valley - Rachel Wright enjoys surprising publicans by hauling the casks off the dray and into the cellar!

Little Valley Brewery sits above Cragg Road - the longest continuous incline in England, raising 968ft in 5.5 miles. It's a real Mecca for cyclists, why not try it if you think you're fit enough?!
