Smashing Pubs in and around Holmfirth

The Nook, Holmfirth
The pub: Also known as the Rose and Crown, there has been a pub on this site since the 1750s. A firm favourite with locals and visitors alike, the family-run Nook is the only pub in Yorkshire to have featured in the Good Beer Guide for over 30 years.
The beer: Produced on site in the Nook Brewhouse, there are always five core beers available. Look out for Cherry Stout, Blonde, Baby Blonde and Chocolate Stout.
What else we like here: this is a quirky pub with colourful characters and decor to match. On the walls there are cartoons by local artist Ben Simpson and photographs by Owen Phillips. The bar menu includes the popular Nooky Pies but there is also an adjoining restaurant, Carniceria, with a fuller menu.
Before and after: Holmfirth is known world-wide as the setting for Last of the Summer Wine, but now that Compo and Clegg have departed, it has made its mark as lively town of cultural events and festivals. The calendar includes Holmfirth Arts Festival, Holmfirth Festival of Folk and Holmfirth Food and Drink Festival. The Nook is always a participating venue. Or you could try our Compo Country walk before ensconcing yourself with your pint.

The Farmers Arms, Holmfirth
The Pub: A traditional village pub about a mile out of Holmfirth, set in the stunning Holme Valley.
The Beer: Alongside beers from Timothy Taylor and Copper Dragon, landlords Sam and Danielle offer other Yorkshire beers on a guest basis.
What else we like here: There is local artwork on the walls and much of the menu is locally-sourced. Everyone is welcome, including well-behaved dogs, and horses (the latter in the car park!). The Farmers is situated in perfect walking country and Digglea reservoir is close by. Keep an eye on the website for details of quiz and open mic nights. If you can't bear to leave, there's a campsite at nearby Thongsbridge and Sunny Bank Guest House just around the corner.
